It’s a classic Kansas City pattern this time of year that is ready to unfold. Large mid to upper level ridge of high pressure to our west will expand east and set up right over our region. This will channel in extreme temperatures from mid week into next weekend.

500mb pattern with large ridge centered over middle of the country
The only chance for a little cooling rain would be Tuesday night into the first half of Wednesday where a few showers or thunderstorms could drop in from our north to northwest. Odds to catch this rain are highest in the northern tier of our area as southern sections are likely to stay dry.
Next weekend could have a frontal boundary drop into the area on Sunday kicking up a couple of showers or storms. There are some signs this frontal boundary will hang up over the area Monday to Tuesday (July 24th – 25th) with some showers or storms along with cooler temperatures before more extreme heat builds back into the area.

Here’s a look at temperatures this week along with expected heat index values. The Excessive Heat Watch will likely get an upgrade to a warning late Monday.
